Whilst jogging and cycling (I’ve been cycling for the past week due to a temporary tendon problem that prevents running) here and there, I’ve noticed that several local bakeries have folded over the past year or two.
There used to be one alongside the River Esk.
There used to be one in the square at Musselburgh.
And there used to be one in St Leonards.
There’s still one in Stoneybank, Musselburgh, where I bought my meat pie today. Very good it was too.
It’s small wonder that the local bakeries are closing, because the supermarkets sell such wonderful bread nowadays – olive loaves, walnut loaves, etc.

As someone who makes their own bread, I wouldn’t put a bought loaf in my mouth if I could help it. Full of chemicals. As for meat pies! Have you heard of mechanically recovered meat? The pink sludge? Dearie me!
Those are the best bits!
As students, Albert and Vinnie would walk stoned across Edinburgh in the middle of the night for apple doughnuts from the bakery at Morrison Street I think.
i love to bake foods and someday, i want to own a bakery myself.*
