I’ve been spending some time making updates to the database which produces the JournalTOCs current awareness service. This is low-level maintenance work, and involves checking for missing ISSNs and, where necessary, adding subject categories.
Usually, it is possible to find the ISSNs from journal homepages. Sometimes there’s no ISSN on the journal homepage, and this may be because the journal has been discontinued, or has been superseded by a new title, or has been transferred to a new publisher, or isn’t really a journal at all. Such records may originally have been added to the JournalTOCs database via OPML feeds from publishers.
I started with 400 missing ISSNs and am now down to 168. I’ll be left with a small residue of records which need to be deleted for one reason or other.
As well as improving the JournalTOCs interface, this tidying up work will help with some proposed collaboration bewteen JournalTOCs and SUNCAT.
Today, it is possible to use JournalTOCs to search by keyword 583,179 of the very latest scholarly articles. The figure changes on a daily basis, as new items are added, and old tables of contents are replaced by new ones. JournalTOCs is an amazing, free, resource for keeping up-to-date with the scholarly literature.
