A year ago I went to an exhibition in the Queen’s Gallery, at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, entitled The Heart of the Great Alone: Scott, Shackleton and Antarctic Photography.
The exhibition featured some wonderful photos taken in the Antarctic, and amongst other things gave some background information about Shakleton’s epic adventure. I’ve still to read a related book about Shackleton by Lennard Bickel – Shackleton’s Forgotten Men: The untold tale of an Antarctic tradgedy, but in the meantime we really enjoyed a Speakers from the Edge presentation by Stephen Venables entitled In the steps of Shackleton, at the Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy, on Thursday evening.
Apart from climbing Everest without oxygen, Venables has twice retraced Shackleton’s steps across South Georgia. The presentation featured some amazing photos and clips of Venables’ trips. Very entertaining talk.
