Yesterday we enjoyed a cruise on the Firth of Forth, aboard the Forth Belle. The cruise left South Queensferry, went upstream under the Forth Road Bridge to Rosyth, then doubled back, went under the Forth Bridge and down to Inchcolm Island where we were dropped off for an hour and a half – enough time to visit Inchcolm Abbey, maintained by Historic Scotland, and the rest of the island. This was a trip booked via Groupon, which made it very good value.
Round the back of the abbey is a hermit’s house.
During the war, 500 soldiers were based on the island, which was seen as a defensive position. A tunnel was built from one side of the eastern hill to the other.
