It took the best part of two days for us to drive from Lalibela back to Addis, through some wonderfully attractive yet sometimes dry countryside.
We saw a few other tourists in Lalibela, mostly French, and they all seemed to leave the town on the same road and day that we did.
Two hours north of Lalibela, along the bottom of a valley, the ground was increasingly dry and the crops looked withered. It was near here that we saw food aid being distributed, to supplement garden produce.
Over a pass and 10 miles further on, and the land looked much more fertile and productive.
Accidents were fairly common. No-one had been hurt in this one. A lad was camping beside the wreck to protect it.
High up in the mountains is the site of a past atrocity where people were thrown off cliffs by the Italians.
