  1. It’s amazing how one person can do all that damage!! This is of course the Great Man view of history, the kind that deals with personalities as opposed to a more social/economic deterministic perspective. Surely all the damage was done by the forelock tugging, aspiring apparatchiks, the lower middle creepy crawlies who would obey and grovel in front of just about anyone.

    • The proletariat in China would outdo themselves in trying to anticipate which way Mao might turn, politically. But a half-raised eyebrow from the Chairman was enough to see the end of hundreds of cadres. They all carried his little red book around with them. Absolute madness.
