Backpacking the Banana Pancake Trail in your 70s: And other short travel stories, by Roddy MacLeod.
This is the title of my newly published book, available through Amazon and free with Kindle Unlimited, or at a minimal cost on Kindle (with half of any proceeds going to Book Aid International charity). You don’t need a Kindle in order to read it, as there’s now a Kindle app.
It’s a collection of true, hilarious short travel stories, and I hope you enjoy it.
“Funnier than Theroux”
The “Banana Pancake Trail” is a loosely defined backpacking route through Southeast Asia, including countries like Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and is currently very popular with 18 to 35-year olds. Ignoring advice from their friends who insist that they are too old to backpack, Roddy and Lindsey set out to discover whether two retirees like themselves can survive and actually enjoy 60 days of independent travel, without any sort of itinerary, on the pancake trail. The results are hilarious and are described in the first of seven funny and entertaining short travel stories featured in this illustrated anthology.
Other stories include:
Last plane out of Paphos before the Apocalypse – Everything is closing down in Cyprus as the coronavirus outbreak takes hold. Will Roddy and Lindsey be stranded or will they find a way to leave Paphos?
The most satisfying moment of my life. Are you taking the piss? – Three days on the magic bus from London to Athens, in the 1970s.
Mad Dave and the Cromdale Mob – The Cromdale mob are out to get Roddy. Can he escape?
Fat Mac and the Singalila Ridge trek – Fat Mac has a unique attitude to travel, and entertains his fellow travellers.
Photographing locals – Experiences of taking photos of local people in remote locations.
A night at the border in the early 1980s – A romantic story.
