Another Day of Life, by Ryszard Kapuściński, is a wonderful book. Published in 1976 it covers the beginning of the civil war in Angola. Kapuściński has a unique and very appealing writing style. His description of what happens at roadblocks, for example, is outstanding.
Well, do they chop your arm off at roadblocks before you’re allowed to go on, or what?
You would have to read that bit yourself, but there is total fear when you drive up to the roadblock, get out, and have to greet the soldiers. Saying the wrong word could get you shot, in those days.
And the waiting around at the roadblocks. You have to be a good writer to make writing about waiting around gripping.
